The Year of the Rabbit - or the Lions?

The Year of the Rabbit - or the Lions?
by Senior Editor Wong Yang

On Thursday, FAS (Football Association of Singapore) president Mr Zainudin Nordin, who is also the mayor of Central Singapore District, announced that the national team will be disbanded after disappointing performances last year. The Lions were knocked out at the group stage in last month's AFF Suzuki Cup. Also some of the ill-disciplined Lions broke curfews and started smoking. Singapore's FIFA world ranking fell last year by 20 places, bringing them to 140th place, which is their lowest ranking.

The players expressed their shock with defender Daniel Bennett saying, "I can't understand what changing the entire squad will accomplish as the difference between winning and losing in knock-out competitions like the Suzuki Cup is marginal. This is really unheard of." Striker Aleksandar Duric, said,"Dropping the entire team does not solve any problems. You still need a good mix of senior players to nurture the youngsters coming through. If you go with a young side, you need to be prepared for years of winning nothing."

Many fans want to see Fandi Ahmad back into national football by managing the team, and I think that is an excellent idea. Aide Iskandar, who led the Lions to the 2007 Asean Football Championships, would make a great coach or assistant. He is currently a player and assistant coach at S-League team Sengkang Punggol.

The new side should have an experienced leader who can be a role model for the team on and off the pitch, like Nazri Nasir (1997 to 2003) and Aide Iskandar (2003 to 2007). The players should be able to fight back like Lions no matter how many goals they are down or how low their morale is. They should be proud to wear the red jersey, to shine for their homeland, for their Singapore. We fans don't ask for wins, we only ask for Lion Lions - Lions who play like Lions, and who want to bring back the Kallang Roar! 2011 will be a critical year for Singapore football. Maybe this will be the Year of the Lions!
